Main research interests
Actually his expertise is in the field of energy and environmental catalysis for development of noble metal (Pd, Pt, Au) supported catalysts on oxides like Al2O3, Co3O4 and CeO2 or silica and mesoporous materials like SBA and MCM. In particular in the last period he carried out catalytic tests for CO, CH4 oxidation, Prox (preferential oxidation), VOCs (volatile organic compounds), NOx abatement, dry reforming and partial oxidation of methane. Moreover he is studying the use of Perovskite-type catalysts as electrodes for IT-SOFCs fuel cells.
After the degree in Chemical Engineering in which during the thesis he worked in the field of photocatalysis, he started with the ISMN (CNR, Palermo division) to work on ceria-zirconia based materials used as TWCs (three way catalysts). He used characterization techniques like XRD (X ray diffraction), TPR (temperature programmed reduction), TPO (temperature programmed oxidation), TPD (temperature programmed desorption), pulse chemisorption, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Moreover he carried out catalytic tests in order to simulate real operative conditions for practical applications and assembled a reaction line equipped with a mass quadrupole and UV and IR analyzers to detect the reaction products. At present he has international collaborations with the Academy of Sciences of Hungary and Bulgaria, Dr. Anne Giroir-Fendler LACE-CNRS, Villeurbanne, Cédex (France), Prof. Norbert Kruse (Université libre de Bruxelles), Dr. Raja Bal (CSIR, India) and recently with Dr. Emrah özensoy (Bilkent University, Ankara). He is co-author of more than 70 publications on ISI journals and referee of journals like Applied Catalysis B.
