CNR-ISMN AT RESEARCHERS' NIGHT WITH SHARPER

Friday 30 September 2022 CNR-ISMN Palermo participates in the researchers' night within the SHARPER project, as a partner of the University of Palermo, with the events "With Chemistry…it is possible!” and “From atmospheric pollutants to synthetic fuels”

Since 2016, the European Researchers 'Night in Palermo is SHARPER, one of the main international events dedicated to the dialogue between research and citizens co-financed by the European Commission in the framework of the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (GA 101061553).SHARPER 2022, SHAring Researchers’ Passion for Enhanced Roadmaps, aims to involve all citizens in discovering the profession of researcher and the role it plays in building the future of society through the investigation of the world based on facts, observations, and the ability to adapt and interpret social and cultural contexts that are increasingly complex and constantly evolving. This year the researchers' night will take place on 30 September 2022 in presence and CNR-ISMN Palermo will participate with two events:

Con la Chimica si può! (“With Chemistry…it is possible!”) (from 07:00 pm to midnight) (Con la Chimica si può! - SHARPER Night (sharper-night.it))

We will show you how Chemistry is able to transform and create new materials by efficient exploitation of the resources at our disposal while respecting the environment and for the benefit of the community, thanks to the support of national (NAUSICA, Mission Innovation, CHANGEGAME) and European (NanoPerWater, NanoTheC-Aba, RM @ Schools 4.0) projects. The topics addressed will concern the purification of polluted waters, the production / storage of clean energy, waste and waste recycling, sustainability, European missions and the objectives for sustainable development. The public will be involved in demonstration experiments, games and other interactive activities and will be guided to discover the power of the invisible.

Type of audience: audience of all ages.

Da inquinanti atmosferici a combustibili di sintesi (“From atmospheric pollutants to synthetic fuels”) (from 07:00 pm to midnight) (Da inquinanti atmosferici a combustibili di sintesi - SHARPER Night (sharper-night.it))

Every day, tons of pollutants are released into the atmosphere. The growing dependence of man on technology (computers, smartphones, tablets) and on ever faster means of transport has led the whole of humanity to a continuous and frenetic race for energy supplies. This grueling race, which involves all sectors, certainly sees the industrial sector as the protagonist, forced to increase production processes and consequently to increase its energy needs. Unfortunately, fossil fuels are still widely used for energy production. Their combustion leads to an excessive formation of pollutants, presenting an increasingly high bill for our planet. Among the species emitted, carbon dioxide (CO2) and nitrogen oxides (NOx) represent some of the main greenhouse gases, which alter the earth's normal thermal equilibrium causing the well-known phenomenon of global warming.

It is therefore necessary to intervene!!!

- Have you ever thought that ships can pollute much more than cars?

- What pollutants are released into the environment? What tools do we have at our disposal to combat this phenomenon and “recycle” pollutants such as CO2?

The researchers of the CNR-Institute for the Study of Nanostructured Materials (ISMN) of Palermo will demonstrate the fundamental role of scientific research, thanks to the funded projects (TECBIA, NAUSICA, Great Relevance Projects MAECI-Russia, MISSION INNOVATION, SI-MARE, THALASSA ).

Type of audience: audience of all ages.

With Leonarda Francesca Liotta, Luca Consentino, Eleonora La Greca and Federico Ferrante

The European Researchers' Night represents an excellent opportunity for knowledge and fun for everyone, young and old. Furthermore, the students of the last year of secondary school will also be able to find valid indications for their university orientation in this experience.
