Friday 27 November 2020 CNR-ISMN participates online in the researchers' night within the SHARPER project, as a partner of the University of Palermo, with the events " Chimica verde per un mondo pulito: è possibile?" and " Scrubbers e catalizzatori a freddo per una navigazione «pulita»"

Since 2016, the European Researchers 'Night in Palermo is SHARPER, one of the main international events dedicated to the dialogue between research and citizens co-financed by the European Commission in the framework of the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions of the Horizon 2020 program. SHARPER, or Sharing Researchers' Passion for Evolving Responsibilities, aims to involve all citizens in discovering the profession of researcher and the role it plays in building the future of society through the investigation of the world based on facts, observations and the ability to adapt and interpret social and cultural contexts that are increasingly complex and constantly evolving. This year the researchers' night will take place on 27 November 2020 in a fully online mode and CNR-ISMN Palermo will participate with two events:

Chimica Verde per un Mondo Pulito: E’ possibile? (16:30-18:30 e 21:00-23:00) (

The sustainable side of chemistry is the least known, but from year to year it is becoming more and more evident. In fact, chemistry is proving to be an effective way to clean our planet, reuse waste, produce clean energy and, in general, to make technological development increasingly technological and increasingly sustainable. In particular, chemistry can transform something that is not needed or that is harmful into something that is useful.

CNR-ISMN participates in the SHARPER project with three conferences of 30 minutes each:

1. “Riducenti, ossidanti e…principesse” (16:30-17:00 e 21:00-21:30) Also suitable for children. The fundamental processes that occur in the production of clean energy are described through an illustrated story.

2. “Creiamo un materiale amico dell’ambiente… da dove cominciamo?” (17:15 – 17:45 e 21:45-22:15) Also suitable for children. Rhyming chemistry is used to show how materials are prepared, even from waste.

3. “Nanomateriali e sostenibilità” (18:00-18:30 e 22:30 – 23:00). The talk is about nanostructured catalysts, their properties and applications in green chemistry.

During the conferences we will show experiments, tell stories and talk about the aspects of chemistry that are good for the environment and promote sustainable technological development. Most of the issues fall under goal 12 concerning "Responsible consumption and production". These activities were devised as part of the “rete Nazionale CNR-ENEA del Linguaggio della Ricerca” (

Scrubbers e catalizzatori a freddo per una navigazione «pulita» (17:00-20:00) (

Ship engines contribute significantly to global emissions of sulfur dioxide (SOx), nitrogen oxides (NOx) and particulate matter (PM) with a significant impact on the environment and health. The Harmony of the Seas, currently the largest ship in the world, burns around 250,000 liters of heavy fuel oil (HFO) every day! The new regulations on emissions from marine engines, according to the MARPOL protocol, require ships (merchant and cruise ships) to meet increasingly stringent regulations. Technology proposes new solutions: AIDAnova is the first cruise ship entirely powered by LNG! But what to do for older generation ships? The "DeNOx" research group of the CNR-ISMN of Palermo in collaboration with Isotta Fraschini Motori and Cetena (Fincantieri Group) studies the application of SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) technology to diesel engines for ships for effective NOx abatement with urea, already starting from 100 ° C, together with the use of scrubbers for an effective removal of SOx. We are waiting for you from 5 pm to 8 pm for a presentation of our laboratory activities and their industrial effects.

The European Researchers' Night represents an excellent opportunity for knowledge and fun for everyone, young and old. Furthermore, the students of the last year of secondary school will also be able to find valid indications for their university orientation in this experience.
