PROJECT SCAMP “SMART COMPONENTS ADDITIVE MANUFACTURING POLIMERICO”

The project “Smart Components mediante Additive Manufacturing Polimerico” (SCAMP), funded by Regione Lazio, is aimed at creating technological demonstrators for an aerospace tertiary structure made of highly innovative polymeric / nanocomposite material.

Within the SCAMP project, the ISMN had the general objective of supporting the development of the formulation of innovative polymeric materials with the most suitable thermo-electrical and mechanical properties with applications in the field of aerospace.

In particular, the subject of the research activity was the micro-structural, chemical-physical and functional characterization of pure and functionalized polymer, suitably selected and of small-sized demonstrators (extruded thin wires), printed using some of the polymer composites.The micro-structural properties of the selected polymeric composites have been studied using XRD diffractometry techniques (XRD on Powders and Grenoble Synchrotron investigation) and Micro-Raman spectroscopy. In addition, the composites were investigated by DSC-TGA thermal analysis, to establish their thermal and resistance properties (thermal degradation). The synergy between the investigation techniques has made possible to study the effect of temperature on the intrinsic characteristics of the polymer (viscoelasticity, percentage of crystallinity) and to determine the temperature intervals relating to their use, their softening and their progressive pyrolysis. This selection of demonstrator materials have also been investigated through AFM microscopy and optics, in order to study the morphology, homogeneity and agglomeration level of the materials, properties that can influence the mechanical and chemical-physical performance of the composite material. Furthermore, the study of the structure-property relationships of composite polymers allows us to highlight, for example, the presence of any imperfections (such as fractures, inhomogeneity, different density of the sample) that can somehow compromise their properties.
